“When four bedraggled nuns – Sister Mary of Calvary, Sister Mary Joseph, Sister Marcellus and Sister Germaine – disembarked from a small merchant ship at Southampton docks on 25 October 1894, their inauspicious arrival heralded the birth of a remarkable educational institution that has continued for 125 years, and is still going strong. Armed with just £40 from the Reverend Mother General at their Mother House in France, they set out to make their mark.”

As part of our 125th anniversary year celebrations, we are delighted to launch our new book, ‘From Good to Great: St Joseph’s College at 125’, written by Marjie Thorne. Marjie spent many months researching the history of the College and exploring our archives to tell the story of our fascinating past from the establishment of a College educating four girls in November 1894, to the modern day co-educational community of nearly 600 pupils.

The 100 page book covers our spiritual beginning from 1894-1902; the importance of St Joseph’s Day; the College’s contribution during two World Wars; and spotlights on boarding life, uniform, performing arts, liturgical dance and school trips. It also tells the story of the arrival of boys in 2010, and highlights the many achievements of our alumnae and the contributions of some memorable teaching and support staff, all of whom have made St Joseph’s the special place that it is today.

The book is available to purchase for £6 (+£2 postage). You can order your copy online
