Dear Old Broad Oakians and Friends of St Joseph’s,

I am writing with news I had sincerely hoped I would never need to share, and I know it will come as a shock and sadness to many of you.

Earlier today, Hilary Buckle, our Chair of Governors, informed staff - on behalf of the Board of Governors - that a period of consultation is to begin regarding the future of St Joseph’s.

You will be aware that the independent school sector has faced significant challenges in recent years. A combination of factors, including the introduction of VAT on school fees, the removal of business rates relief, rising operational costs, and the wider cost‑of‑living crisis, has created a very difficult landscape. Sadly, despite exploring a wide range of options, the Governors have not been able to secure a sustainable financial path forward for the College.

As part of this consultation, staff are being invited to share any ideas that might help safeguard the future of St Joseph’s. However, if no viable solution can be found, the College will close on 10 July 2026.

If you have any thoughts or suggestions to share with the Governors, please email them at Governors@sjcr.org.uk.

Like you, we are deeply saddened by this news. It has been a privilege to lead St Joseph’s for almost five years, and one of the greatest joys has been getting to know so many of you - hearing your stories, your memories, and celebrating your achievements. Whether you left recently or many years ago, you remain an enduring part of the St Joseph’s family. You are its living legacy, carrying forward the values, spirit and sense of community that make this place so special.

We know how much St Joseph’s means to so many of you. I take great comfort in the memories we continue to share, not least our 130th anniversary celebration last July. Seeing over 200 of you gathered together was truly unforgettable, and a powerful reminder of the lasting bonds formed here.

In the coming months, our priority is to support our pupils and staff, ensuring they feel valued and supported, and that their time at St Joseph’s concludes with the care and recognition they deserve. Equally, we want to honour the role that each and every one of you has played in shaping the College.

Our planned Summer Reunion on Sunday 5 July will be an important and special opportunity for Old Broad Oakians, staff, parents, pupils and friends to come together to reflect, to reconnect, and to celebrate all that St Joseph’s has meant to us. I very much hope you will be able to join us.

With warmest wishes, and heartfelt thanks for all you have given to St Joseph’s.
